climb Mount Fuji,
O snail,
but slowly, slowly.
Issa: Self-Portrait
goes out,
comes back –
the loves of a cat
I'm going out, flies,
so relax,
make love.
children imitating cormorants
even more wonderful
than cormorants.
even with insects –
some can sing,
some can't
I'm going to roll over,
so please move,
cricket.
we humans –
squirming around
among the blossoming flowers.

Note: While it’s common practice to cite the translators’ names, unfortunately many posting of Issa’s works on which I rely are online and lack translator information.
